Hi . . . I'm compiling the lyrics from the Top 30 Northumbrian songs of all time, a little promotional competition we've been holding here in Northumberland, UK, and I'm stuck on this one.

There was a thread in '01 (Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall (?)Brannegan?) in which different people threatened to find the lyrics, but it fizzled out and none were every posted. All help appreciated!

There is a boxed set of 20 CDs called The Northumbria Anthology. One of the CDs in the set is called "Alang the Roman Waal: Songs of the South Tyne," and one of the songs on that CD is "Alang the Roman Waal" sung by Bill Robinson. Apparently the CDs are not available individually.

That's all the info I can find. At least now we know the correct spelling.

I found this which is fascinating albeit not what you're looking for.

Roman Wall Blues

Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

The rain comes pattering out of the sky,
I'm a Wall soldier, I don't know why.

The mist creeps over the hard grey stone,
My girl's in Tungria; I sleep alone.

Aulus goes hanging around her place,
I don't like his manners, I don't like his face.

Piso's a Christian, he worships a fish;
There'd be no kissing if he had his wish.

She gave me a ring but I diced it away;
I want my girl and I want my pay.

When I'm a veteran with only one eye
I shall do nothing but look at the sky.

        -- W. H. Auden

There's a song about a Roman soldier which has a chorus something like:

So far from home and every man's an enemy,
So far from home and not a chance of leave.
So far from home no pretty wife to care for me
Pity us poor soldiers we've cause enough to grieve.

And Leslie Fish did a nice setting of Rudyard Kipling's poem "Lalage" from Puck of Pook's Hill:

When I left Rome for Lalage's sake
By the Legions' Road to Rimini,
She vowed her heart was mine to take
With me and my shield to Rimini—
(Till the Eagles flew from Rimini!)
And I've tramped Britain and I've tramped Gaul
And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall
As white as the neck of Lalage—
As cold as the heart of Lalage!
And I've lost Britain and I've lost Gaul,'
'And I've lost Rome, and worst of all,
    I've lost Lalage!'

This makes a wonderful tune for long-distance tramping, by the way.

Allow me (my audio transcription)

Alang the Roman Waal

At skeul we aal were told aboot
The Romans that came up North
An' built a great big hefty waal
From Tyneside te Solway Forth
But hoo they fittered their time away
When neebody wanted a fight
The teacher knew, but he waddn't say
So I'll tell yer aal tonight.

Alang the Roman Waal, alang the Roman Waal
The Roman ways in bygone days
Were tarrible te recaal!
Coz aal the fat centurions from Heddon to Whetheraal
Wez chasin' the lassies aal over the place
Alang the Roman Waal!

They waaked aboot wi' helmets on
Unless they were gannin' te bed
They had nee sergeants nor NCOs
They'd centurions instead
One thing fairly amazes me
They spoke a language se queor
On Satada neet when oot on a spree
They could order pints o' beor!

Alang the Roman Waal, alang the Roman Waal
The Roman ways in bygone days
Were tarrible te recaal!
Coz aal the fat centurions from Heddon to Whetheraal
Wez chasin' the lasses from Shotley Bridge
Alang the Roman Waal!

A've hunted roond for souveniers
What's not in the big museum
But aal a've foond is lumps o' brass
That's rubbish to me the same
A'd like to dig up a pot o' gowld
Te stand me missus a treat
Or Nero's fiddle tho' it's a bit owld
Aa could play it Satada neet

Alang the Roman Waal, alang the Roman Waal
The Roman ways in bygone days
Were tarrible te recaal!
Coz aal the fat centurions from Heddon to Whetheraal
Wez chasin' the lasses from Rydon Mill
Alang the Roman Waal!

The song Dave referred to above is in thread: Lyr Req: So Far From Home, where it is unattributed. It was written by Tim Brooks, and I think his original title was The Marching Song of the Ninth Legion.

(I might add that Dave Holden wrote a parody of it called The Garden Gnome, with a chorus starting It was a garden gnome and in his hand anemone)
