Subject: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: GUEST,[email protected] Date: 11 Sep 03 - 06:53 AM Hi . . . I'm compiling the lyrics from the Top 30 Northumbrian songs of all time, a little promotional competition we've been holding here in Northumberland, UK, and I'm stuck on this one. There was a thread in '01 (Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall (?)Brannegan?) in which different people threatened to find the lyrics, but it fizzled out and none were every posted. All help appreciated! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Sep 03 - 10:02 PM There is a boxed set of 20 CDs called The Northumbria Anthology. One of the CDs in the set is called "Alang the Roman Waal: Songs of the South Tyne," and one of the songs on that CD is "Alang the Roman Waal" sung by Bill Robinson. Apparently the CDs are not available individually. That's all the info I can find. At least now we know the correct spelling. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: John MacKenzie Date: 11 Jul 05 - 04:59 AM I found this which is fascinating albeit not what you're looking for. G.. Roman Wall Blues Over the heather the wet wind blows, I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose. The rain comes pattering out of the sky, I'm a Wall soldier, I don't know why. The mist creeps over the hard grey stone, My girl's in Tungria; I sleep alone. Aulus goes hanging around her place, I don't like his manners, I don't like his face. Piso's a Christian, he worships a fish; There'd be no kissing if he had his wish. She gave me a ring but I diced it away; I want my girl and I want my pay. When I'm a veteran with only one eye I shall do nothing but look at the sky. -- W. H. Auden |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: Dave Bryant Date: 11 Jul 05 - 10:05 AM There's a song about a Roman soldier which has a chorus something like: So far from home and every man's an enemy, So far from home and not a chance of leave. So far from home no pretty wife to care for me Pity us poor soldiers we've cause enough to grieve. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: GUEST,LynnT Date: 11 Jul 05 - 12:49 PM And Leslie Fish did a nice setting of Rudyard Kipling's poem "Lalage" from Puck of Pook's Hill: When I left Rome for Lalage's sake By the Legions' Road to Rimini, She vowed her heart was mine to take With me and my shield to Rimini— (Till the Eagles flew from Rimini!) And I've tramped Britain and I've tramped Gaul And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall As white as the neck of Lalage— As cold as the heart of Lalage! And I've lost Britain and I've lost Gaul,' 'And I've lost Rome, and worst of all, I've lost Lalage!' This makes a wonderful tune for long-distance tramping, by the way. LynnT |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 11 Jul 05 - 02:44 PM The song Dave referred to above is in thread: Lyr Req: So Far From Home, where it is unattributed. It was written by Tim Brooks, and I think his original title was The Marching Song of the Ninth Legion. Mick |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Roman Wall From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 11 Jul 05 - 02:47 PM (I might add that Dave Holden wrote a parody of it called The Garden Gnome, with a chorus starting It was a garden gnome and in his hand anemone) Mick |
