Not complicated in the slightest, Jim - quite understandable. Without trying to sound like a wet lettuce, one of the annoying things about my childhood and upbringing was the constant moving from one place to another - country to country, town to town - the uprooting of friendships, the sense of not really belonging in the area where I lived. To this day if someone says, "Where are you from, originally?", I suppose I would answer "Lancashire" - but I feel little affinity with it. Living in Scotland made a big impressions on me as a kid, and life in cities like Leeds and London also left their mark. I've been in my Sussex village for 40+ years - so I'm not quite a foreigner...
